Located on Corso Canalgrande, il Teatro Comunale was built by the architect Francesco Vandelli in 1841. The opera house's fašade, with its Neoclassical touches, is accentuated by bas-reliefs representing tragedies written by locals. Those bas-reliefs, along with the statue of il Genio di Modena high above the entrance, were the work of the sculptor, Luigi Righi. The interior of the theatre has remained intact since its construction and was recently restored to its original splendour. Its acoustics and decorations supposedly make it one of the best theatres in Italy. For its inauguration in 1841, Alessandro Gandini's opera "Adelaide di Borgogna al Castello di Canossa" was played. In 2007, the official name of the opera house was changed to il Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti, to honour the opera singer, a native of Modena, upon his death.
