Completely rebuilt in 1617 as a replacement to the original 13th century structure, la Chiesa di San Vincenzo later became the funerary church of the Dukes of Modena. This honour was originally intended for la Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, which had been enlarged and embellished for the purpose. Two architects, Paolo Reggiano and Bernardo Castagnini, worked on San Vincenzo and designed a red ochre Baroque fašade with white Corinthian pillars, and a richly decorated interior containing elaborate frescoes by the artist, Sigismondo Caula. Unfortunately, WWII bombings damage the apse of the church and the dome's frescoes forever.
