Commissioned by Duke Francesco III, l'Ospedale Sant'Agostino was built between 1753 and 1758. When in 1771 l'Arsenale Ducale (today's Palazzo dei Musei) was completed across the street, l'Ospedale Sant'Agostino also became the military hospital of Modena which necessitated further expansion. Thus in 1772, the structure was significantly enlarged and saw the construction of the long austere façade with minor Baroque details. L'Ospedale Sant'Agostino remained as a functioning hospital until 2004 when the entire function was transferred to a more modern facility elsewhere. Thereafter, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena purchased the former hospital to turn it into a large cultural centre containing an exhibition hall and an extension of the Estense library. L'Ex Ospedale Sant'Agostino is located at the western end of the historic centre of Modena, across from la Chiesa di Sant'Agostino and Palazzo dei Musei.
