The Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. is home to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. When the US Capitol moved to Washington in 1800, the Treasury occupied an existing Gregorian-style building, which was damaged by fire just a year later then totally destroyed by the British in 1814. The newly rebuilt Treasury building matched the equally new buildings housing the Departments of State, War and the Navy.
The second Treasury building, again burned down from arson in 1933. The current building was constructed from 1836-1842 by the same architect who designed the Washington Monument. The building's south wing was constructed from 1855 to 1861, and construction on the west wing lasted from 1855 to 1864. The north wing, designed by the same architect who built the Executive Office Building, was constructed in 1867. The fifth floor, called the Attach Story, was added in 1910.
The original plan for Washington DC called for an unobstructed view from the Capitol to the White House, but the Treasury's south wing blocked this view. The treasury is the third oldest federally occupied building in Washington DC, after the White House and Capitol Building.
Sculptor James Earle Fraser created the statue of Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury which stands in front of the southern facade facing The Ellipse, and a statue of the 4th Secretary, Albert Gallatin, stands in front of the northern entrance.
It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1972.
