The historic old town of Cuenca is what most visitors come to see and usually end up based in or around the old central area. The area extends north of the Rio Tomebamba and covers an area of roughly 200 hectares. The centre oozes with colonial and republican architectural atyle and charm and is simply a joy to wander around. Traffic can be heavy during the week but at weekends it is quiet and pleasant to walk around the centre.
The main points of interest for visitors exploring the old town are centred around Parque Calderon and include the New and Old Cathedrals, San Francisco Square as well as the beautifully preserved cobbled streets and colonial style town houses complete with old wooden balconies. The colonial charm and historical significance of Cuenca?s historic centre were officially recognised by UNESCO when it was placed on its heritage list in December 1999.
