Favorite thing: Hmm, so many things about Hawkshead were enjoyable. Its smallness, its villageness, the tiny streets and winding lanes, the people, the architecture, the pubs, the real ales, the food. We rented a cottage for two on the edge of the village. Beautiful cottage garden to relax in. We did a lot of walking.... or should I say strolling. Its the perfect place. Mind you, the weather was exceptional the week we were there. There were a number of pubs and inns, but the one that caught our attention ever time was the Red Lion. Plenty of lovely views, history, and driving routes to occupy everyone. We'll definitely be back.
Fondest memory: Setting out from our rented cottage, walking through the lupins and roses in the cottage garden, out the back gate and through the fields full with sheep; across the county lanes, nodding to the farmer who opened the gate for us, waving at the bus driver, stopping to chat with the lady who was out walking her dogs. Big skies, sunshine... We walked from Hawkshead into Coniston and treated ourselves to a pint of real ale and an ice-cream - not all at the same time. We sat in the unexpected sunshine and heat and and people watched. The stroll back to Hawkhead was just as pleasant.... in time for a teatime and a gorgeous pie and a pint in the Red Lion.
