Hamburg, as a or even the major port in Germany, has seen more than its share of emigration, people waiting for the next ship, not knowing what would await them. There is a very interesting musuem dedicated to emigrants, the Ballin Stadt.
Several buildings make up the museum and you can follow the fate of some families who had emigrated. Lots of tapes to listen to, lots of videos to watch, life-size dolls illustrate the difficult situation many families found themselves in.

In the first building you can check out your own family, there are several computers set up to a genealogy site.

I liked this museum very much! You can just walk through in maybe one hour, but you can easily spend much more time there.

Entrance fee for adults: 12 Euro

Address: Ballin Stadt, Veddeler Bogen 2
Directions: I took S 31 towards Harburg, got off at Veddel-Ballinstadt, and just followed the signs. It's about a five minute walk.
