Province of Iloilo Things to Do: 50 reviews and 175 photos

We explored the Southern towns of Iloilo in our second day and we headed to the farthest town first and from there we will visit one by one the towns we passed by as we go back to Iloilo City.We took an ordinary Ceres bus from Molo terminal that is bound to Antique. We paid P58.00 for the 1.5 hrs ride.

Our first target is the church of San Joaquin. We walked around 400 M towards the church from the highway and also took our Breakfast to a "Carinderia" along the way.
The San Joaquin church was said to be the only church with a militaristic motif which distinguishes itself from other churches in the Philippines. It was built in 1869 by the Augustinians lead by father Santaren. That is why the seal of the Augustinian order was carved right above the main entrance. It is made of lime stones and white coral stones. The church actually resides on a plane with its right side facing the sea.

Why Militarictic, It is because carved on the upper part of the facade is an intricate sculptural relief depicting the Spanish victory over Moroccan forces in the Battle of Tetuan in 1860. At the base of the relief is the title of the composition ?Rendicion de Tetuan? . A carving of Nuestra Seņora de Angustias can be found on top of the pediment, instead of a cross. The interior of the church is very simple and a bit modern.

The first level of the facade was divided with 4 pillars on heavy finials and 2 niche can be found in between embellished with series of rosettes. San Pedro Regalado on the right side niche, the other one is empty. The bellfry is embellished with balustrade on the second level and climbing the tower through its back will show the road towards the highway and the Garin farm with a big cross can be seen from afar.

The church was listed by the National Historical Institute as a National Cultural Treasure.

Address: San Joaquin, Iloilo
Directions: not located along the highway, just tell the driver to drop you at the road leading to the church.
