The Plough and Harrow: "A Great Haunted Pub" Cowbridge Restaurant Tip by Balam

This fantastic pub dates back to 1383 when the area Monknash was the richest estate owned by the cistercian abbey at Neath and was established by the monastery to provide food and other goods. With the disolution of monastic houses in 1536 the land and it's buildings were sold off to the wealthy Stradling family of nearby St Donats Castle.

The pub is a fine an example of a lobby entry house built at that time with its great beamed ceilings, Tudor style doors and large open fires.
The bar used to have a partitioned chamber at the far end where it is said shipwrecked bodies were stored after being washed up on the beach from ships wrecked by the infamous Ship Wreckers of Wick. and a supernatural investigation in 2006 found that there are a number of ghosts resident in the building some of which have been known to throw glasses as well as move chairs and ornaments.

It really is a fantastic Pub with a great atmosphere and is well worth a visit for a couple of drinks or for some of their great food.

Favorite Dish: Wednesday nights are steak night with 8oz sirloin or 10oz rump steaks all the trimmings plus choice of sauce for only £10 and desserts are just £2!
