We'd been to the original Green Iguana on Westshore in South Tampa, and we really liked the small, but trendy local bar. One day while fighting traffic around Walmart and Home Depot, we decided to try the Green Iguana on North Dale Mabry. Yes, this is the one with the huge thatched tiki hut roof, within sight of Raymond James Stadium.

The restaurant is attached to a mid-grade hotel, maybe a Days Inn, but don't let that distract you. The dining room is very large and exceptionally modern and clean, but packed with TVs for your sports viewing pleasure; the huge U-shaped inside bar dominates the dining room. Outside is a cool, L-shaped open air patio with a small stage right at the 90 degree angle; here there is also a small bar and lots more flat screen TVs.

When we parked, we heard music coming from the patio under the thatched roof, so we quickly asked to be seated there. We got a table for two near the outside bar, with a good view of the singer, and also with line of sight to several TVs. We also joined a crowd of college football fans, including those trickling out of the stadium after USF's homecoming game.

For our lunches Laura started with a fruity drink called the Bahama mango ($8) and she ordered the sambal salad ($10). I got a bottle of Yuengling ($4) and the Baja chicken sandwich ($7.50). Laura's drink was huge and tasty, and the Yuengling ice cold. The sambal salad was a tasty Thai-style mix of fresh greens, cucumber, tomato, mint, basil and toasted peanuts in a sambal chili vinaigrette, topped with grilled shrimp and breaded fried fish--it was a pretty big meal. My Baja chicken sandwich came with a juicy marinated chicken breast on a bun with red pepper mayonnaise, roasted tomato and onion, pepperjack cheese and avocado. I had it served with a small cup of fruit, though you can also get it with fries.
