Bukkoji was originally further south, but was moved here in 1586. It got its name from Emperor Godaigo. It is said that the Amida Statue was stolen from the original temple and the emperor's dream of light showing in a bamboo grove led his servants to where the statue was left. As a result, the temple was named Bukkoji, which means, "Light of Buddha Temple".
