"The Great Zimbabwe ruins are..." Zimbabwe Things to Do Tip by jaec

Zimbabwe Things to Do: 182 reviews and 210 photos

The Great Zimbabwe ruins are one of the highlights of a trip to Zimbabwe. This city once held up to ten-thousand people and flourished from the 11th to 15th century. The ruins are all dry stone with no mortar. The ruins consist of three main areas. The hill enclosure is believed to be the oldest. It has the feel of a fortress and is thought to be the home of the ruler of the civilization. The valley enclosures are the homes of the nobles and servants. The Great Enclosure, the last to be built is the most photographed of the ruins. It is a remarkable architectural feat. It is thought to be the home of the rulers wives and children.
Try to get one of the government trained guides for a tour. Ours had been trained for three years and been doing tours for another six. He added a great deal to the experience and was more than able to answer any of our questions.
