Seiryoji is where Minamoto no Toru, the man said to be the inspiration behind the character Genji in the Tales of Genji, lived in a villa here and is buried here. The temple was established here in order to house a precious Shaka statue brought by the Chinese Priest Chonen from India.

Most of the temple was reconstructed in 1701. The grounds feature a Tahoto Pagoda, pond, and a beautiful sculpture of Fu Daishi, a famous Chinese Priest, with his sons.
