Vatnsdalshólar are a cluster of countless hills in Vatnsdalur valley in North-Iceland. They are of all sizes and are one of 3 innumerable wonders of nature in Iceland, the 2 others being the islands of Breiðafjörður (see my tip on Breiðafjörður) and the lakes in Arnarvatnsheiði.

These hills are considered to be formed by a cathastrophic landslide. You can see them from ring-road 1 as well, all of a sudden the landscape changes and is covered in what looks like large breasts (you will see why I say so). They cover the ground of 4-5 sq.km. The largest hills are over 84 meters above sea-level.

Opposite the road the last executions in Iceland took place in 1830, when Friðrik Sigurðsson and Agnes Magnúsdóttir lost their head for murdering Natan Ketilsson.

Directions: Just outside of Blönduós town in North-Iceland. Coming from Blönduós on ring-road 1 take a left turn on road 722 (gravel road).
