As well as obtaining all the usual tourist information you would expect from a TIC this one also provides a big chunk of local history.
It is housed in a former coaching inn on the Rouen - Caen road; some say it, or another hostellerie, stood on the site when William sailed for England.
Just to enter the office and look around is a treat - with ancient woodwork and design, murals and stained glass windows to feast your eyes upon.
In one corner a TV screen shows a continuous slide show based on paintings, pictures and post cards which convey the origins and history of the old Inn. Henri 1V, Marie de Medici, Louis X111, Madame de Sevigné and Alexandre Dumas Snr are all said to have been guests here.
In another corner access to wifi internet!
Its heyday as an hotel came with the explosion in tourism brought about by the railways and it was at this time people flocked to Hostellerie Guillaume Le Conquerant.
This was also when some of the florid touches in Medieval and Renaissance style were added by the owner Monsieur Le Remois, an enthusiastc amateur artist and hotelier, both inside and outside the building.
If you choose to enter through the archway below the Hostellerie sign be prepared to spend a bit more time than you would normally allow for and Information stop!
Directions: Opposite a small municipal park with car parking. There is also parking behind in Place de la Republique.
