Almost at the very end of Mżrdalssandur vast sands driving east you will notice a whole lot of small cairns all of a sudden almost changing the landscape. There is an information sign there and a must stop I would say. The saying goes that everybody coming here for the first time should add a stone to a cairn there for good luck on their journey.
The Icelandic Public Roads Administration sees to it that there is always a good supply of rocks so that tourists can build their own cairn for luck :)
The name Laufskįlavarša comes from the farm Laufskįlar which is said to have been situated here but was destroyed in a Katla eruption in 894.
From here you can still see Mżrdalsjökull glacier and Kötlujökull glacier.
This is one of very few places where it is allowed to make cairns in Iceland. It has become such a problem in many places where tourists are creating small cairns. I don“t think they realize what they are doing and that Iceland is getting inundated with small cairns in so many places.
Directions: By ring-road 1 almost at the very end of Mżrdalssandur driving east.
