Driving through the vast Mżrdalssandur sands coming from Vķk you will notice Mżrdalsjökull glacier and the icefall Kötlujökull glacier. In Mżrdalsjökull glacier is the dreaded volcano Katla. It is one of the biggest central volcanos in Iceland and when it erupts it is one of the most violent catastrophes which take place here in Iceland. They result in huge glacial floods. It erupts every 40-80 years and last time it erupted in 1918 so...
The vast sands of Mżrdalssandur were formed by Katla's eruptions.
You can stop at information signs midway through Mżrdalssandur and read up on Katla. What we most feared when Eyjafjallajökull was spouting millions of tons of ash over us and Europe that Katla would awaken. Our president even went so far as telling Europeans who were tired of Eyjafjallajökull ruining their holiday: "You ain't seen nothing yet" - referring to the fact that Katla might erupt. That is known to happen, one volcano awakens another. Fortunately it hasn't yet happened.
Having been scared by Katla and knowing that it might erupt when ever I didn't even feel comfortable stopping at the information sign.
