  A street in Castellar
by King_Golo

Castellar is the first village that you pass when you drive towards Sospel from Menton. It's worth stopping here for an hour or so, especially if it is your first trip to the "villages perchés". Castellar is beautiful with its narrow alleys and tunnels under the houses, but what makes it special is the ingenious way of ventilation. During the hot Mediterranean summers, the air heats up quickly, so all of the hilltop villages have narrow streets that allow only a fraction of the sunlight to enter. Castellar combines this with parallel streets that create a kind of wind channel and thus ventilate the village even better.

Directions: just north of Menton
