Hiroshima is well served by the Sanyo line on the JR network. From Tokyo, the journey will take around 4 hours by Nozomi Shinkansen or 5 by Hikari, from Okayama about 40 minutes. Using the rail pass will mean that you cannot travel by Nozomi so you will have to use the Hikari Shinkansen and then change to the Rail Star along the way. As is the amazing norm with the Japan rail system, the changes are usually like clockwork and you won’t have to wait long for your connection.
Arriving in Hiroshima you will be able to get to central Hiroshima easily by using the regular tram service.
