This wonderfully twiddly Gothic structure is on Aleksoto.

It's called the 'thunder' house because a statue of Perkunas, the thunder god, was found in one of its walls. But that was in the 1800s: that's not the original name of the house.

It is thought that the house was the home and business premises of a merchant during Hanseatic times, but has served many purposes since...including being Kaunas' first theatre in 1844.

Although my guidebook said it is open to the public, I saw no sign of that and, as it is very near my hotel, I walked past several times on several different days. But it is worth seeking out just for its exterior.

Address: Aleksotos 6
Directions: Aleksotos leads off the SE corner of the Old Town square. House is on the right as you near the riverside.
