"Pieterpad, long distance walk" Top 5 Page for this destination Netherlands Sports & Outdoors Tip by ATLC

Netherlands Sports & Outdoors: 38 reviews and 45 photos

This is a north-south (or vice-versa) walking route in the eastern part of The Netherlands, nearly 500 kms long.
Long distance walking is a very old tradition in Europe. But in our small country, this is about the longest route you can make (unless you walk in circles, of course!).
Many of such routes are to do with very old commercial roads, or pelgrimages and such. These routes would exist for centuries.
By lack of such a route in The Netherlands, there were 2 Dutch ladies who simply made one up! They walked and described the route between 1975-1981. So there will be a 30 year anniversary in 2011!

The name Pieterpad is derived simply from the northern-most destination Pieterburen and the southern-most destination Pietersberg near Maastricht. Hence: Pieterpad.

Equipment: You need a map of the route. Now, it is a bit protected, you will have to google quite deeply to find it but here is a google map route

I am still in search for an English guide but if you want to walk the path, then buy these guides that include maps, from publisher Nivon.

Just note that the path is changed and adapted often, due to changes in road works, etc. So an up to date guide is advisable.

There are also accommodation guides and themed walks to do with birds, wines, etc.
