A visit to Iglesia La Merced is a bit odd, if only because the church is currently undergoing a massive renovation that will undoubtedly see it claim its place as one of the Casco Antiguo's prime sights. Until then, however, it is rather strange to visit a church and admire the altar and the architecture, while workers gut the pews, refinish the stone floors and clean the walls. La Merced is another of the beautiful Colonial, Baroque churches in Panamá's Casco Antiguo, with an interesting façade that contrasts the dark stone of the portico with the whitewashed Campaniles. The interior of the church has exquisite dark wood pews and altar, with gold gilding. Hopefully, the renovations will not last long and the Church will be back to its former glory.
