"Monastery of St Petka" Orovnik Things to Do Tip by Pijlmans

The Monastery of St Petka is located on a hill above Orovnik.
The steep road to the monastery is asphalted. However, instead of taking the car, we walked from the Church of St Ilija at the cemetery to the Monastery of St Petka in about 30 minutes. You'll have a nice view of Lake Ohrid and the airport during this walk.
This is a working Monastery, where you can spend the night. It's free but a gift to the church is always welcome of course. Rooms are very basic, but the common room even has satellite TV :-)
A sign at the monastery states: Dedicated to St Petka the Roman. In the middle of the Monastery there is a source of holy water, which is good for the eyes, headache and women who cannot have children. There are lodging houses to stay for free, and a yard for spiritual rest.
When we were there in August 2010, there was not exactly what one would call spiritual rest, since people were working with excavating machines to make a bigger parking place.
Don't expect to fill buckets with the holy water, since it is delivered only drop wise from a small pipe at the side of the church. You can see the water through a glass plate in the floor of the Church of St Petka as well.
