Klaipeda is a charming town, but for me, the main reason to go there is because it is the gateway to the utterly wonderful Curonian Spit.

The Curonian Spit was everything that I hoped the Baltics would be, and more. It helped that we visited on an absolutely perfect summer day, and my abiding memory is that it was one of the most perfect days I ever remember having on holiday.

It is possible to stay in one of the small towns on the Spit - and this is the option that I would explore were we lucky enough to return - but even if you're only going on a day trip, you will still have a fantastic time. The ferry takes cars as well as foot passengers, and because the Spit is narrow and not all that long, it's easy to get around. In fact, on reflection, I think that the best way to explore the Spit would be on a bike, and I rather like the image of peddling along on a flat road through shady woods with the sound of the wind and sea in my ears!

Clearly it's time I returned ...!!!
