This flagpole is the tallest flagpole in the world. It stands at a height of 100 meters (328 ft) and was where the independence of the then Malaya was announced. The flagpole commemorates the spot where the Union Jack was lowered and the Malayan flag (now called the Jalur Gemilang) was hoisted for the first time. The event took place on midnight of the 31st August, 1957.
