The Centro Cultural Metropolitano, located in the old Central Bank building, is an interesting foray by the city into the realm of modern, converted-building museums. The structure is a beautiful neo-Classical one that is typical of bank and central bank buildings around the world. It has since been converted to a space in which various cultural institutions have found a home. Some of the halls are now occupied by libraries (not open to the general public), while others have been converted into small galleries that feature free exhibitions of work by artists, both local and foreign. The courtyards are covered and have cafés and patios for people to read and relax. When I visited the Centre in July 2010, there was a free exhibition of works by artists from the Spanish city of Cádiz that stressed the transatlantic artistic relationship.
Address: Eugenio Espejo and Sebastian Benalcazar
