Unlike Florence, where we had to give up the idea of having a good lunch at a snackbar, there are plenty of little cafes and markets in Venice where you can stop for an unexpensive AND very tasty lunch! Indeed, many places sell sandwiches (called a "tramezzino" in Italian) that are perfect to fill that little spot of hunger that develops from walking all over the city. They come in many different varieties: ham and cheese, ham and mushroom, ham and artichoke, ham and egg, egg and tuna... they're usually made with fresh white bread and a bit of mayonnaise, and they sell for about 2 Euros a piece. They're pretty small, so I usually ordered 2 or 3, but it still made for an unexpensive lunch that we sometimes ate on the spot, while other times we ordered our sandwiches to go and found a nice outdoor spot for a little impromptu picnic. Definitely a life - and budget - saver in Venice!
