Frankfurt is not a major draw for tourists and pleasure-seekers, but it is an important centre of finance and commerce for the European Union. I can?t remember the placement of the DAX in the ranking of global stock indices, but it is undoubtedly up amongst the largest, competing with FTSE in London and NASDAQ in New York. The building itself is an impressive example of one of the few neo-Renaissance structures employed for a commercial exchange (they usually seem to be neo-Classical). The exchange as an institution was founded in 1585, but this building was constructed in 1871 (and probably reconstructed after the Second World War). Its dark stone and regal ornamentation help to give it that aura of old money and sober deliberation of business deals, which is certainly the stereotype of Continental stockbrokers and financiers, compared to their Anglo-American colleagues. Of course, this is complemented by the near-mandatory statues of bear and bull out front of the building.

Address: Börsenplatz,
Directions: Just off of Börsenstrasse
