Official Name: Italian Republic; Land Area: 116,300 square miles (301,200 square kilometers); Population: 61,016,804; Capital: Rome; Largest City: Rome

The Roman Forum was the center of political, commercial, and judicial life in ancient Rome. The area was once a marshy hollow between the Capitoline and Palatine Hills which was drained by Lucius Tarquinius Priscus, an early Roman king, shortly after Rome was founded.

The ruins of the Roman Forum span several periods of Roman history, including the Republican and Imperial periods. The major ruins include ten temples, three basilicas, four arches, and numerous other buildings.

Tentative excavations of the Roman Forum began in the late eighteenth century, but it was not until 1803 that more extensive and serious excavations began. Nowadays, some excavation continues, but most of the major work was completed early in the twentieth century.

The three tall white columns pictured here, just to the left of center, once formed part of the Temple of Vespasian.
