Many of the cafés and restaurants in Rüdesheim serve a local delicacy known as Rüdesheimer Kaffee. This is coffee served in a traditional china vessel (see photo), with flaming Asbach brandy poured into it and cream floated on the top. It is similar to an Irish coffee though for the latter you don’t flambé the alcohol before adding it to the coffee. Despite having over-indulged so much during the cruise, my mother in law and I decided we just had to try one. You can see her watching our waitress prepare the treat in photo 2, and yes, it was as delicious as we had hoped! If you want to try one too look out for signs like the one in my third photo: ”fuer Sie am Tisch flambiert”. That way you can be sure you’ll be able to watch the drink prepared at the table, as we did. And if you want to try it at home, several shops in the town sell the traditional vessels, and Asbach, which is made locally, is widely available too.
