This shrine is located in an area of southwest Kyoto, somewhat removed from the rest of the city. The area is beautiful in the fall and it's never crowded. The shrine has a beautiful pond that many poets once wrote poetry around.

The shrine was built in 1652. It formerly held the Fujiwara family's patron god, and was moved here from the short-lived capital Nagaokakyo when Kyoto became the new capital. It was favored by the Emperor and Empress, and the court made offerings here; It was placed among the top 22 shrines in the nation.

Entrance is free.

Address: 1152 Minami Kasuga-cho
Directions: It's located just across the street from Shoboji Temple, another hidden treasure!
