Shugakuin Imperial Villa is located up in the countryside of northeastern Kyoto. They were built by Emperor Gomizuno in the mid-seventeenth century. It is divided into three parts, the lower villa, middle villa, and upper villa. The lower villa is where the waiting area is located. The middle villa was built for the princess.
The upper villa is the largest and most famous. You enter from the top, presenting a stunning view of the rest of the upper villa below. Then, you walk down past the waterfall and around the lake to see the upper villa and iconic bridge from all angles before exiting through the lower villa. Each villa is connected by a path of pines cut in the imperial-style. Between the villas are farmlands. The garden was well-constructed to be in-tune with the surrounding area.
