"Standing Stones" Top 5 Page for this destination Isle of Arran Things to Do Tip by hevbell

Isle of Arran Things to Do: 58 reviews and 180 photos

Walking to Kings Caves we noticed all these stacked stones near the shore - probably NOT some meaningful ancient site, but just someone with way too much time on their hands!

If you do want to see proper standing stones, however, there are some on Machrie Moor, just a bit north of Blackwaterfoot, off the main road. After the trek to Kings Caves on a fairly hot yucky day, we decided to give this a miss as the stones are around a mile from the road and we couldn't face it quite honestly! Looking back I'm disappointed we didn't make it as that was one thing I wanted to see on the island. There are several ancient monuments in the area around Machrie Bay - the Machrie Moor stone circle, Moss Farm Road Stone Circle and Auchgallon Stone Circle from the Bronze Age.

Directions: west coast of Arran
