In the middle ages Dürnstein was the property of a noble dynasty, the Kuenringer. Their castle is located on top of a rock high above the town. It has long been in ruins. It is the setting of old storeis and legends - Richard Lionheart was imprisoned here for a short time on his return from the Crusades.

The castle ruin is open all day and can be visited for free. Be prepared for a short but steep hike. Unfortunately we did not have enough time to go up.

In the times of the Renaissance a new castle was built further down in close vicinity to the town, the Augustine convent and the river. This building is now an upscale hotel.
