"Best free thing #22: Defenestration building" Art - Architecture Tip by goodfish
Art - Architecture, San Francisco: 42 reviews and 98 photos
An abandoned eyesore of a hotel recycled into whimsical art - gotta love it. I read that defenestration means " to throw out of a window" and it appears that the contents of the building are making a run for it. What does it mean? Whatever you think it does. Is the chair searching for a purpose? Has the clock run out of time? Are these objects of daily living rebelling against a throw-away society through their refusal to be left to molder into dust? Are they - like people - choosing to escape dead-end lives?
The work was created by 100 volunteers in 1997 as a temporary exhibit that ended up capturing the imagination and hearts of an economically-challenged neighborhood. Work is underway to raise the funds to repair and preserve this unique landmark indefinitely or until the building itself is purchased and restored.
While not exactly in the Tenderloin, it's sort of on an interesting edge of it so make your visit during the day.
Address: Sixth and Howard Streets, south of Market
