The first time we came to Chinchilla weir, was for the "free camping," how-ever, the second time we came back to enjoy a picnic beside the water. Since our last visit, new free electric bbq's have been put in, before there were only wood bbq's. The grass is cut, there are plenty of Gum trees that provide shade in summer and Picnic shelters with tables & chairs, wood bbq's (check for fire-bans),Toilets, Boat ramp and plenty of car parking area.
The Weir is good for fishing,...Remember, if you catch Carp or Talapia, then these must be destroyed, not thrown back into the lake, or used for bait, as these are "Pest Fish."
The Sunday we returned to the Weir was quite warm, so no surprise to see quite a lot of people having picnics and bbq's here. There were quite a few Boats out on the water, some were towing skiiers, others were tubing, wake-boarding, there were kayaks and Jet-skies, all looking to be having a great time. NO Boat, no problem, swing on a rope and land in the water, or just go for a swim to cool off!
Well, we weren't out on the water this time enjoying ourselves, but we were sitting on our rug having a good time watching them!
Expect to see Kangaroo's in the paddocks next door at dusk and dawn, plenty of Parrots and birdlife, what a nice area this was!
Address: Tara road - 8kms from Chinchilla
Directions: From the Warrego Highway in Chinchilla, go over the railway overpass, and out through town, driving for about 10 minutes. A sign on the left of the road points into the picnic/camping area.
