  cape st. george lighthouse
by doug48

this historic lighthouse was used as a navigational tool to guide ships into apalachicola bay. the town of apalachicola was a very important port during the 19 th and early 20 th centuries. the first cape st. george lighthouse was built in 1848 and was destroyed by a hurricane in 1851. a new lighthouse was constructed in 1852 from salvaged remains of the original lighthouse. the lighthouse was damaged by hurricane opal in 1995 and again by hurricane georges in 1998. these two hurricanes undermined the lighthouse's foundation and it collapsed in 2005. the lighthouse was again rebuilt in 2008 and today is part of the st. george island visitor center. for those interested in florida history the st. george lighthouse is worth a visit when in st. george island.
