"The Cisterns" Aden Municipality Things to Do Tip by TheLongTone

Aden Municipality Things to Do: 9 reviews and 14 photos

The Cisterns of Tawila are just about the only recognisable tourist attraction in Aden. Carved out of the mountains which more or less surround the old town of Crater, or the Old Town of Aden, this impressive system which served both to protect the town from flash-floods and also to store the water against drought is of considerable antiquity, possibly over two thousand years: they were certainly in existence when Islam came to Yemen.

They haven't been functional for a long time, and what can now see (thirteen of the original fifty-odd tanks) is the result of restorative work which was begun by the British in the nineteenth century. Aside from being of historic interest, the site is now a pleasant park where the locals take their leisure. My guide said this was where he took his first date!
