Even if you don’t have a guide book you will enjoy the Old Town of Corfu. It is built between the two fortresses and its walkable (10-15’ from one side to the other although there’s no direct street).
We spent several mornings or evening just walking through the maze of the tiny alleys without really knowing where we were although after a while we started to feel that we see something familiar, a small tavern (pic 2), an old well (pic 3) or just another church. The buildings in the Old Town are coming from different history periods, that’s why the architecture is very diverse and influenced from those who occupied the island each time (normans, venetians, French, british etc) Don’t forget that before the venetians the city was actually inside the Old Fortress.

We found it romantic walking through the kantounia (small alleys), especially at Campiello district where the alleys are tiny and usually less crowded (I guess in summer they are packed too). Off season, it was so nice to see pics like this (pic 4), most of the times we passed from people’s homes although small stores were hidden here and there. During the night they were great too. Pic 5 have been taken just near Agios Spiridon church, we felt it was part of a nice European film…
