The Plakada Tou Agiou is a small square that houses 3 different churches. The most popular is Agios Spiridon but the other two also interesting. Pic 1 show them together (on the left is Faneromeni church)

Faneromeni church is three-aisle basilica from 18th century with wooden roof. It was built by monk Nikodimos(from Epirus) and it was the church for the people from Epirus region (guilds of furriers and goldsmiths that came to Corfu after the persecutions by turks in mainland). The ceiling (ourania) was painted by N. Koutouzis (18th century) I tried to take a picture but the low light condition during the mass didn’t help much (pic 2) but the atmosphere was really devout. Check also the impressive old temple, decorated with gold that was restored in 1875 by some Italians that were specialized in Rococo style. The church is also known as Panagia Ton Ksenon (Madonna of the Foreigners)

Ioannis o Prodromos church is located right next to Faneromeni church. It was built in 1480 in the typical single-aisle basilica like many other churches in Corfu. The exterior is very simple as you can see in pic 1(on the right). The temple from local marble houses images of famous painters of Creta-Corfu school like G.Hrysoloras, Tzanne etc. We were there during a mass (pic 3), the church was really packed but I had the time to check some of the paintings at the exonarthex where there are also several gravestones, one of which covers the tom of a russian captain who died in 1799. The ceiling is nice, painted by Sp.Sperantza in 1773 but it was imposible to take a pic (and I didn’t want to use the flash during the mass). The church celebrates on august 29 in honor of Saint John The Baptist but it’s also dedicated to Agia Paraskevi and Agios Dionysios
