Panagia Tenedos church is a historican catholic church located near the New Fortress. It is known as Panagia Tenedos because after the occupation of Tenedos island by the turks some francs monks transferred an icon of Virgin Mary in Corfu.
The official name is Catholic church of Blessed Virgin of Carmel. It was built in 1663 in order to house a catholic study area for catholics. The church was damaged during the turk siege in 1716 and the church was consecrated again in 1749 from the bishop Antonio Nani. At the main entrance you can see a nice sculptural depiction of the venetian lions and several coats of arms of famous venetians families.
The French (1797-1799) settled here the first public library on the island, which later formed into the basis of Ionian Academy library (but destroyed by Nazis during WWII). In 1804 the church housed a public school (with Kapodistrias in charge)
The church celebrates on july 16, every year, the icon of Virgin of Carmel is at the sanctuary.
