The palace of Saints Michaels & George is an impressive building in Georgian rhythm by maltese stones. The main entrance is fronted by a long colonnade in Doric style. There are two tall gateways on both ends, we crossed many times from the one at the left that leads to the harbor. On the upper part of the building are many symbols of the Ionian islands (Corfu is shown as a ship).
The palace was built in 1819 (it was completed in 1823) by Sir George Whimore during the british occupation of the island. The bronze statue in front made by P.Prosalentis showing the second English governor F.Adams(he constructed the city’s water supply). The building first was the headquarters of the Order of Saints Michael & George and then it was used as the summer palace for the greek king between 1864 and 1913.
The reason to visit the interior of the palace is that it houses the Archive of the Ionian Senate, the Corfu Public Library(with more than 60,000 books) and the Corfu Museum of Asian Art. The collection includes more than 10,000 exhibits, most of them donated by Gregory Manos(in 1919) that collected them from Japan, China and other asian countries. Some other rich people like N.Chatzivasiliou(in 1974) and C.Chiotakis(in 1980) donated some art works too. I got bored with the many porcelains but I liked the Japanese masks for the theatre, some Chinese statuettes from 7th century, and I found interesting the samurai’s suits and armours.
The museum is open daily 8.30-15.00 (closed on Mondays) and the entrance fee is 3euro.
The palace also houses (at the east wing) the Municipal Gallery (see next tip)
