Looking at the OS map of this region, I had noted castle ruins at Kirkoswald. On our last day, we took to the motorbike and parked by a footpath sign. No mention of the castle but we knew it was close by somewhere. After a few yards, the huge moat became evident and then the scant few remains, including a 60 feet high tower on the northern side and some vaults. This must have been an impressive castle, judging by the size and evidence of the moat. It covers an area of 3 acres.
The castle was destroyed in 1314 by Robert the Bruce but was re-built in 1317 and later, extended and a moat added, in the late 15thC.
