Looking at the OS map of this region, I had noted castle ruins at Kirkoswald. On our last day, we took to the motorbike and parked by a footpath sign. No mention of the castle but we knew it was close by somewhere. After a few yards, the huge moat became evident and then the scant few remains, including a 60 feet high tower on the northern side and some vaults. This must have been an impressive castle, judging by the size and evidence of the moat. It covers an area of 3 acres.

The castle was destroyed in 1314 by Robert the Bruce but was re-built in 1317 and later, extended and a moat added, in the late 15thC.

The location is beautiful, set in woodland, it is well hidden from those who don't know of it's existence. The ruins are rather precarious now and it is not adviseable to go climbing on them.

All around us,primroses grew, with the odd bluebell just making an appeareance. We were the sole visitors here and we were entranced with the setting. Nature had been left to it's own devices and taken over, with trees and vegetation growing out of the ruins. It just seemed a special place to us.
