"AMAZING KARNIVAL" Karnival Tip by alyf1961

Karnival, Valletta: 1 reviews and 5 photos

Malta's Karnival goes back hundreds of years. It starts one week before Ash Wednesday and even the knights of St John celebrated it.

The name carnival derives from the Italian word "carne vale" which means meat is allowed. During the forty days of lent meat is forbidden in the Roman Catholic religion so people celebrated prior to the fasting period.

The Karnival is an explosion of colour and music with decorated floats and costumes. Some of the floats take a year to complete and they are amazing.

The Karnival starts from Floriana and makes it?s way through the narrow streets of Valletta.
The parade is on for three days with hundreds of floats taking part.
Crowds of people line the streets with children dressing up in beautiful coloured costumes and outfits.
