"A Lot of Hotels Once" Esk Local Custom Tip by wise23girl

We lived in Esk for 7 years and in that time there were 3 pubs still standing and very popular with the local men. Would you believe ladies were not welcome in those hallowed walls and it took a lot of courage to enter when the ban was lifted ...and I am not saying when that was....and if you know please do not give me away.

At one time there were 4 pubs all within 'spitting distance' with room for a couple of shops in the main street. Now this was and is a small town. One pub was burnt down before our time.

Now there is the Esk Club Hotel, The Grand Hotel and the one now an Antique Shop (open Sundays). I think this was once the Metropole.

It was the Grand Hotel I once ventured into as one of the first women allowed in to the bar.

There were quite a few surprised looks from the men drinking at the bar.
