Rustem Pasa Camii, Istanbul: 6 reviews and 24 photos
A small mosque, almost totally hidden in the warren of streets around the Spice Bazaar.
Try to find Hasirsilar Caddesi and then Rustem Pasa Mahkmesi Sok.
You are looking for two stone arches, on the right if you come from the Spice Bazaar, both of which have stone staircases within...they will be almost hidden between market stalls.
What's the reason for visiting this mosque, built by Sinan for Rustem Pasa (the vizier for Suleyman the Magnificent) in 1561? Quite simply, its tiles.
They are absolutely superb. Iznik tiles of the best type, with deep reds mixed with their wonderful blues and a multitude of different patterns to be seen.
Well worth wandering the crowded and narrow streets around the bazaar (of interest in themseves) seeking out those stone arches.
