This is a small hole-in-the-wall barbecue joint along Suoth Dale Mabry in South Tampa. It sits in what looks to have been an old drive-through fast-food joint, but the drive through is now full of split mesquite, perfect for smoking great beef, pork, and chicken. After driving by this restaurant almost daily for about 5 months, I finally stopped in one day for lunch. The restaurant is really rustic, but well-lit and comfortable. About half of the front of the restaurant is the food prep area, and the other half contains maybe 6 tables. I glanced over the menu and noticed a few unusual items that I had to ask about, including the small end sandwich (which is made from the small end of the ribs). I also asked about the beef sandwich, and the lady behind the counter said it wasn't brisket or tri-tip (they don't eat that part of the cow in Alabama!); she gave me a fresh cut piece with barbecue sauce to sample before I decided. It was good stuff, especially the sweet, thick, rich barbecue sauce, so I decided on their beef sandwich that they offer for just $4.50. The chopped beef was piled high and delicious.
BJ's offers about seven sandwiches, homemade sweet tea, and numerous sides such as collard greens, macaroni & cheese, corn on the cob, jalapeno peppers, potato salad, macaroni salad, cole slaw, green beans, BBQ beans, and corn bread.
BJ's just opened in 2008, but it was founded by the family of Big John who started Big John's Barbecue in North Tampa, which has been in operation for some 40 years.
Price Comparison: least expensive
Price: less than US$10
