The Red Fort, Agra: 187 reviews and 453 photos

Outside Agra Fort, close to the main gate, stands this magnificent equestrian statue. It represents Chhatrapati Shivaji, a Hindu king who visited the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, and on being made to stand behind military commanders felt insulted and stormed out of the court. He was placed under house arrest along with his 9 year old son and learned from spies that he might be assasinated. According to legend, he feigned illness, asked for and received permission to send boxes of sweets to holy men in return for their prayers, and after several days of doing so, hid himself and his son inside some of the boxes and thus escaped.
