Sheffield is a small town of about 1,000 people mostly farmers of sheep, cattle and emus. It was facing decline but changed its fortunes by becoming an 'outdoor art gallery'.
There are some 50 fascinating murals in the town telling the story of the area. You can take a self-guided audio tour 'Story of the Sheffield Murals'.
I drove through Sheffield on the way from Cradle Mountain to Launceston but was only able to stay a very short time - enough to know I had missed out on something special.
Directions: On the road between Cradle Mountain and Launceston - or 35 minutes from Devonport where the ferry 'The Spirit of Tasmania' docks.
