The first stop along the rim drive is Discovery Point. This is the point where John Wesley Hillman ?discovered? the lake on 12 June 1853. He was searching for a lost gold mine and initially named the lake ?Deep Blue Lake? because of its deep blue color. The lake was ?rediscovered? and renamed several times. It was named ?Crater Lake? in 1869 and became the 6th national park in 1902.
